Teaching and Learning Series: Session One: Understanding/Designing Curriculum
Whether you teach a fixed curriculum designed by a full-time faculty member, or are creating a credit or non-credit course yourself, this session will help you to:
recognize the role of course learning outcomes in the curriculum design process;
write learning outcomes that accurately articulate required knowledge, skills, and attitudes;
recognize the relationship among teaching methods, evaluation strategies, and learning outcomes; and
design a sequence of instruction that supports the achievement of learning outcomes.
Teaching and Learning Series: Session Two: Selecting Teaching/Learning Methods
This session will build upon the session one in assisting you to deliberately select and implement a variety of methods to support your students’ success. As well, the session will include a lesson-planning template that addresses the diversity of student learning styles.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
select active learning strategies to support student learning;
plan lessons that address student learning styles and provide repetition and practice; and
select formative feedback activies to integrate into lessons.
Teaching with Technology: Session Three: Introduction to WebCT Vista
This highly interactive session will focus on the basics of our learning management system used at DC and UOIT - WebCT Vista. This session will cover logging in, customizing your homepage, adding files, content links, and your course syllabus. Some discussion will occur regarding the variety of tools offered in WebCT Vista, time permitting.
Teaching with Technology Series: Session Three: Introduction to WebCT Vista (Grades Submission)
The focus of this session will be the set-up and use of Gradebook and e-marks submission using WebCT Vista. The Assessment and Assignment tools will also be reviewed for consideration of integration into your current teaching methodology. The use of interactive learning objects and other possibilities will be demonstrated.
Teaching and Learning Series: Session Four: Assessing Learning
In this session, the principles learned in sessions one and two will be applied to the design of appropriate evaluation tools. By the end of this session, you will be able to:
select appropriate evaluation strategies to assess student learning;
create rubrics for the evaluation of student assignments; and
implement best practices for the creation of multiple-choice test items.
